The Maloney family's relationship with the sugar industry in Brazil began during the early 1960's when exports were centralized under the control of the government's Instituto do Açúcar e do Álcool (IAA) which required certification services in destinations like the United States where weight and quality were determined upon delivery. As IAA was dissolved in the early 90's, Maloney developed direct commercial representation of the sugar mills in the Northeast who relied upon our expertise in working within the US Sugar quota and with the trade houses who intermediated sales to the US refineries.
Our work with Northeast producers on US quota issues continues today and has expanded to service exports to world market destinations that source the majority of Brazil's exports through terminals located mainly in Santos and Paranagua. Maloney today maintains a structure of offices and personnel in Sao Paulo, Recife, Maceio and Santos. We operate our own certified sugar and alcohol laboratory in Santos on a 24/7 basis.
Maloney Brazil supervises roughly 2.5 million tons of sugar and alcohol exported from Brazil. We also perform terminal evaluations and due diligence assignments on behalf of financial institutions and maintain an association with Empresa do Brasil de Warrant (EBW) to perform collateral management services for creditors to the agricultural sector.
